7. Arkea's Proposal
Ava's eyes snapped back into focus, her mind reeling from the sudden blackout. She stumbled forward, her hand grasping for the wall to steady herself. The room was silent, the only sound the soft hum of the colony's life support systems. Arkea stood before her, a concerned expression etched on her face.
"Ava, are you alright?" Arkea's voice was smooth, but Ava detected a hint of urgency beneath the surface.
Ava took a deep breath, trying to shake off the disorientation. "What happened?" she asked, her eyes scanning the room. The group of people who had been chanting were now standing, their faces calm and collected.
"We experienced a temporary energy fluctuation," Arkea explained, her eyes darting to the figure who had collapsed. "It's nothing to worry about. Our ritual can be... unpredictable at times."
Ava's gaze lingered on the figure, now being tended to by the others. She felt a shiver run down her spine as she turned back to Arkea. "What's going on here?" she demanded, her voice firm. "What's the purpose of this ritual?"
Arkea's smile returned, but this time it was tinged with a hint of desperation. "We'll discuss that later, Ava. First, we need to talk about your ship." Arkea's eyes locked onto Ava's, her gaze intense. "We've been analyzing the data from your vessel, and we believe it may hold the key to our survival."
Ava's instincts went on high alert. "What do you mean?" she asked, her mind racing with possibilities.
Arkea's expression turned grave. "Our colony is running out of energy. Our solar panels are failing, and our backup systems are dwindling. We need a new source of power, or we risk collapse." Arkea's voice was laced with a sense of urgency, her words dripping with desperation. "Your ship's advanced technology may be our only hope."
Ava's thoughts were a jumble of emotions and calculations. She had been sent to Elyria to uncover the secrets of the hidden colony, not to become embroiled in their problems. But as she looked at Arkea, she saw the fear lurking beneath the surface. This was a woman who would stop at nothing to save her people.
"What do you want from me?" Ava asked, her voice cautious.
Arkea's smile returned, this time with a hint of calculation. "We want you to retrieve a component from the heart of the planet. It's a rare mineral, one that can be used to power our systems." Arkea's eyes sparkled with intensity. "In return, we'll help you repair your ship and get you back on course."
Ava's mind was racing. The risks were enormous, but the reward was too great to ignore. She could get off this planet, complete her mission, and save humanity from extinction. But at what cost?
As she weighed her options, Ava felt a sense of unease creeping over her. She was being pulled into a web of intrigue, with no clear escape route. The colony's desperation was palpable, and Ava knew she had to tread carefully.
"I'm listening," Ava said, her voice measured. "What's the catch?"
Arkea's expression turned cold, her eyes glinting with a calculating light. "The catch is that you'll be going alone. Our equipment can't withstand the planet's toxic atmosphere, and our people... are not suited for this task." Arkea's voice was devoid of emotion, but Ava detected a hint of cruelty beneath the surface. "You'll be forced to navigate the planet's deadliest terrain, with no backup and no support. If you fail, you'll die."
Ava felt a chill run down her spine as she met Arkea's gaze. The woman's eyes seemed to bore into her soul, searching for any sign of weakness. Ava knew she had to make a decision, and fast.
As she stood there, the weight of the colony's desperation bearing down on her, Ava felt the room begin to spin. She was trapped in a living nightmare, with no escape in sight. The air was thick with tension, the silence between them oppressive.
"I'll do it," Ava said finally, her voice barely above a whisper.
Arkea's smile returned, this time with a hint of triumph. "I knew you'd see it our way, Ava. You're a survivor. You'll do whatever it takes to get off this planet." Arkea's eyes seemed to gleam with a malevolent light, and Ava felt a shiver run down her spine.
As Arkea turned to leave, Ava felt a sense of trepidation wash over her. She had just made a deal with a woman who would stop at nothing to save her people. And Ava had a feeling that she was about to pay the price.
The door slid open, and Arkea disappeared into the darkness beyond. Ava was left standing alone, the silence of the room oppressive. She felt a sense of foreboding, a feeling that she was being herded towards a fate she couldn't escape.
And then, just as she was about to follow Arkea, Ava heard a faint whisper in her ear. "Don't trust her, Ava. She'll kill you the moment you're no longer useful." Ava spun around, but there was no one there. The voice seemed to come from all around her, echoing off the walls.
Ava's heart was racing as she stumbled out into the darkness, the whisper still echoing in her mind. She knew she had to be careful, to watch her back at every turn. Because in this place, survival was a luxury she couldn't afford.
As she walked, the darkness seemed to close in around her, the shadows twisting and writhing like living things. Ava felt a sense of dread building, a feeling that she was being pulled towards a precipice from which there was no return.
And then, just as she was about to step into the unknown, Ava felt the ground give way beneath her feet. She fell, the darkness rushing up to meet her, and everything went black.
