3. The Art of Deception

Lulu's hands moved tentatively as she grasped the scalpel, her eyes fixed on Ruby's expectant face. The older woman's wild curls were tied back in a colorful scarf, and her eyes sparkled with enthusiasm as she guided Lulu through the basics of taxidermy. They stood in Ruby's workshop, a cozy trailer filled with the scent of preservatives and the soft hum of a radio playing jazz music in the background. The air was thick with the smell of sawdust and paint, and Lulu felt a thrill of excitement as she began to work on her first project – a small rabbit, its fur a soft gray that seemed to glow in the morning light. "Remember, gentle strokes, Lulu," Ruby said, her voice low and soothing, as she demonstrated the proper technique for making an incision. "You don't want to damage the skin or the underlying tissue. Taxidermy is all about creating the illusion of life, not just preserving death." Lulu nodded, her brow furrowed in concentration as she carefully made the first cut. Ruby watched her with a critical eye, offering words of encouragement and correction as needed. The sound of Asher's voice, low and smooth, drifted in from outside, where he was working on a new mount, but Lulu tried to focus on the task at hand. As they worked, Ruby regaled Lulu with stories of her own apprenticeship, of the trials and tribulations she had faced learning the art of taxidermy. Lulu listened, entranced, feeling a sense of connection to this fiery, flamboyant woman who had taken her under her wing. The rabbit began to take shape under their skilled hands, its glassy eyes seeming to stare up at Lulu with a curious intensity. Ruby's laughter, a throaty, joyful sound, filled the trailer, and Lulu found herself smiling, feeling a sense of belonging she hadn't experienced in years. Just as they were finishing up, Asher appeared in the doorway, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled at Lulu's handiwork. "Not bad, not bad at all," he said, his voice low and smooth, as he examined the rabbit. "You're a natural, Lulu." Ruby beamed with pride, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "I told you she had potential, Asher. She's a quick learner." Asher nodded, his gaze lingering on Lulu's face before he turned to Ruby. "I think we might have a new star in the making. What do you say we showcase her work at the next stop?" Ruby's face lit up, and she began to enthusiastically discuss the possibilities, but Lulu's mind was already racing ahead, wondering what other challenges lay ahead. The sound of gravel crunching outside signaled the arrival of a visitor, and Lulu's heart sank as she saw Gid's sleek black car pull up beside the caravan. The tax collector's face was a mask of determination as he stepped out of the vehicle, his eyes scanning the community with a calculating gaze. Ruby's expression turned guarded, and Asher's smile faltered, his eyes narrowing as he watched Gid approach. "Well, well, well," Gid said, his voice dripping with condescension, as he strolled towards them. "Look what we have here. The famous taxidermy community, living large and avoiding their civic duties." Lulu felt a surge of fear, her mind racing with the implications of Gid's visit. The community gathered around, their faces tense and worried, as Gid began to rattle off a list of unpaid taxes and licenses. Lulu's eyes met Asher's, and she saw a flicker of concern there, before he turned to face Gid. "We're not avoiding anything, Gid," Asher said, his voice calm and even. "We're just... creative with our accounting. You know how it is." Gid snorted, his face reddening with anger. "Creative? You call evasion creative? I call it illegal. And I'm here to collect what's owed. One way or another." The threat hung in the air, heavy with menace, and Lulu felt a chill run down her spine as she realized the stakes were higher than she had ever imagined. The community began to murmur, their voices rising in protest, but Gid raised a hand, silencing them. "I'm not leaving until I get what I came for. You have 48 hours to come up with the payment. After that... let's just say I have ways of collecting debts." With that, he turned on his heel and walked away, leaving the community in a state of panic. Lulu watched him go, her mind reeling with the implications. She had never meant to put the community at risk, but it seemed she had done just that. Ruby's hand on her shoulder brought her back to reality, and Lulu turned to face her, seeing a look of concern etched on her face. "We need to come up with a plan," Ruby said, her voice low and urgent. "We can't let Gid shut us down. Not now, not ever." Lulu nodded, feeling a surge of determination. She would do whatever it took to help the community, to protect the people she had come to care for. But as they began to brainstorm, Lulu realized that she was in over her head. She had no experience with tax evasion or creative accounting, and her inexperience was putting the community at risk. Asher's eyes met hers, and she saw a flicker of doubt there, before he turned away, his expression neutral. As the night wore on, the community's discussion grew more heated, their voices rising in argument. Lulu felt like an outsider, unsure of what to do or say. She had never meant to cause trouble, but it seemed she had done just that. The stars twinkled above, a distant reminder of the world beyond their small, troubled community. Lulu's heart felt heavy, her mind racing with the consequences of their actions. She knew that she had to find a way to make things right, to prove herself to the community and to Asher. But as she looked around at the worried faces, she wondered if she was up to the task. The sound of footsteps outside signaled the end of the meeting, and Lulu stood up, feeling a sense of trepidation. She knew that the next 48 hours would be crucial, that the community's fate hung in the balance. As she walked back to her trailer, the darkness seemed to close in around her, and Lulu felt a sense of fear creeping in. She had never felt so alone, so unsure of what the future held. The note on her door, the one that had warned her to back out, seemed to echo in her mind, and Lulu wondered if she had made a terrible mistake. And then, just as she was drifting off to sleep, Lulu heard the sound of footsteps outside her trailer, light and cautious, as if someone was trying not to be seen. Her heart racing, she threw off the covers and crept to the door, peering out into the darkness. A figure, shrouded in shadows, stood just beyond the reach of the trailer's porch light, watching her with an unblinking gaze. Lulu's breath caught in her throat as the figure slowly raised a hand, beckoning her to come out and play.
